Lucki Camel Jr. (born May 30, 1996), known professionally as Lucki (stylized as LUCKI, formerly as Lucki Eck$), is an American rapper, record producer, and songwriter from Chicago, Illinois. He began releasing music as a teenager and attracted attention in the early 2010s through the Chicago music outlet Elevator and his debut mixtape, Alternative Trap (2013). His early music, which he described as "alternative trap", combined sparse electronic-influenced production with a subdued vocal delivery and introspective lyrics.[1][2]

Lucki developed a dedicated following through a series of independently released mixtapes and extended plays, including Body High (2014), X (2015), Freewave (2015), Son of Sam (2016), Freewave II (2016), and Watch My Back (2017). His 2019 mixtape Freewave 3 received widespread critical attention for its stripped-down production and emotionally introspective writing, while Days B4 III later that year became his first project to appear on the Billboard 200.[3][4]

After entering a distribution agreement with Empire, Lucki released the EP Almost There in 2020 and the collaborative album Wake Up Lucki with producer F1lthy in 2021. He subsequently released the studio albums Flawless Like Me (2022) and S*x M*ney Dr*gs (2023), which debuted at numbers 12 and 15, respectively, on the Billboard 200.[5][6]

His third studio album, Gemini!, was released in 2024 and debuted at number 20 on the Billboard 200.[7] His fourth studio album, Dr*gs R Bad, was released in May 2026 and debuted at number nine, giving Lucki his first top-ten album on the Billboard 200.[8][9]

Early life

Lucki Camel Jr. was born on May 30, 1996, in Chicago, Illinois.[1] He grew up listening to artists including Erykah Badu, Prince, and The Notorious B.I.G., and later cited Chief Keef, Future, Kanye West, and Babyface Ray among his musical influences.[1][2]

He began rapping during his first year of high school after encouragement from friends. He initially performed under the name Lucki Eck$. He later left Proviso East High School at age 16 to pursue music full-time.[1]

Career

2012–2014: Early career, Alternative Trap and Body High

Lucki began releasing music in the early 2010s under the name Lucki Eck$. His early recordings attracted the attention of Elevator, a Chicago-based music outlet that premiered videos for songs including "Untouchable Lucki" and "Everything Out$ide".[10]

Lucki released his debut mixtape, Alternative Trap, on July 25, 2013, at age 17. The project was produced in part by his friend and frequent early collaborator Plu2o Nash. Its sparse, atmospheric production and understated vocal delivery distinguished it from the drill music that was prominent in Chicago at the time. Lucki subsequently used the term "alternative trap" to describe his approach to music.[1][2]

The mixtape attracted coverage from publications including XXL, Complex, Elevator and Noisey. Its song "Count on Me" became one of Lucki's early breakout recordings and helped establish his reputation in Chicago's emerging internet-rap scene.[1]

In 2014, Lucki released his second mixtape, Body High. He also collaborated with FKA twigs on "Ouch Ouch" and with Danny Brown on "Weightin' On", released through Red Bull Sound Select.[11][12]

In December 2014, Lucki collaborated with fellow Chicago rapper Chance the Rapper on the song "Stevie Wonder".[13]

2015–2018: X, Freewave, Son of Sam, Freewave II and Watch My Back

Lucki released his third mixtape, X, on May 30, 2015, his 19th birthday. The project continued the atmospheric approach of his earlier work while expanding his use of melodic vocal phrasing.

Later in 2015, Lucki released a series of tracks that were collected as the Freewave EP. The project was released in October 2015 and was expanded with the song "Rumors" in November.

In January 2016, Lucki announced that he had changed his stage name from Lucki Eck$ to Lucki, explaining that he had outgrown the former name.[13]

He released the EP Son of Sam in March 2016 and Freewave II in August of that year. The releases continued to develop his restrained vocal style and dark, atmospheric production.

Lucki released Watch My Back on May 5, 2017. The project became an important release in his underground catalog and further developed the combination of melodic rap, sparse production and introspective songwriting that had characterized his earlier work.[13]

During this period, Lucki remained primarily an underground artist, releasing music through internet-based platforms and building an audience without the level of mainstream exposure associated with many of his Chicago contemporaries.

2019–2021: Freewave 3, Days B4 III, Almost There and Wake Up Lucki

Lucki released his fifth mixtape, Freewave 3, on February 15, 2019.[3]

Freewave 3 marked a significant critical turning point in Lucki's career. Pitchfork described its production as a refined continuation of the dark, electronic-influenced sound of Alternative Trap, while noting a more restrained and weary vocal delivery. The publication emphasized the project's treatment of addiction, trauma, relationships and emotional isolation.[3]

The mixtape included production from ChaseTheMoney, Earl Sweatshirt, Cash Cobain and others. The songs "More Than Ever", "Glory Boy" and "All In" became prominent recordings from the project, with "All In" produced by Earl Sweatshirt.[3]

Later in 2019, Lucki released Days B4 III. The project followed Freewave 3 while presenting a somewhat lighter and more melodic sound. In an interview with The Fader, Lucki discussed his development as an artist and the changing circumstances surrounding his music.[4]

Days B4 III became Lucki's first project to enter the Billboard 200, reaching number 188.[14]

Lucki released the EP Almost There on May 29, 2020. The project served as an interim release while he continued working on subsequent music.[15]

In 2021, Lucki collaborated with producer F1lthy, a member of the production collective Working on Dying, on Wake Up Lucki. The album was released on December 3, 2021, following the single "Neptune v.s Industry".[16]

Pitchfork described the album as being built around synth-heavy production and Lucki's diaristic songwriting, emphasizing the contrast between the futuristic production and his emotionally detached delivery.[16]

2022–2023: Flawless Like Me and S*x M*ney Dr*gs

In 2022, Lucki began moving toward a larger commercial audience while retaining the musical characteristics of his earlier work. He released the singles "Super Urus", "Y Not?" and "Coincidence". The latter was accompanied by a music video directed by Cole Bennett.[17]

Lucki released his debut studio album, Flawless Like Me, on September 23, 2022. The album included guest appearances from Future and Babyface Ray and debuted at number 12 on the Billboard 200.[18][19]

The album represented a transition from Lucki's earlier underground releases toward more polished studio production and a wider commercial audience, while maintaining his characteristic melodic and introspective approach.

On April 27, 2023, Lucki released the single "Leave Her".[20]

His second studio album, S*x M*ney Dr*gs, was released on July 7, 2023. The album debuted at number 15 on the Billboard 200.[6]

In an interview with Rolling Stone published shortly after the album's release, Lucki discussed his career trajectory and the development of his audience. The publication described him as having grown from an underground artist into a significant figure in contemporary rap while retaining substantial creative control over his musical identity.[5]

2024–present: Gemini! and Dr*gs R Bad

Lucki released the single "All Love" on March 23, 2024. His third studio album, Gemini!, followed on June 14, 2024. The album featured Lil Yachty, Rylo Rodriguez, Veeze, Future, and 42 Dugg.[21]

Gemini! debuted at number 20 on the Billboard 200, becoming Lucki's third consecutive studio album to reach the top 20.[7]

The album continued Lucki's use of atmospheric trap production while incorporating a broader range of production styles and collaborations. Contemporary reviews noted its continued reliance on cloudy trap production while also highlighting influences from other strands of Midwest rap.[22]

In October 2025, Empire filed a lawsuit against Lucki in San Francisco Superior Court, alleging that he had breached an exclusive distribution agreement by releasing music through UnitedMasters. Empire claimed that a 2024 agreement gave it options on additional albums and exclusive distribution rights. Lucki's legal team disputed aspects of Empire's interpretation of the agreement.[23][24]

Lucki released his fourth studio album, Dr*gs R Bad, on May 15, 2026. The album contains 26 tracks and features guest appearances from artists including Veeze, Rylo Rodriguez, Lil Baby, Lil Yachty, and Chynna.[25]

Dr*gs R Bad debuted at number nine on the Billboard 200, giving Lucki his first top-ten album on the chart.[9]

The album was received as a continuation of Lucki's established sound alongside a greater emphasis on polished and accessible production. Pitchfork described the record as a refinement of the hazy style Lucki had developed throughout his career while arguing that some of the emotional directness of his earlier work had been reduced in the process.[26]

In June 2026, Lucki announced that he had signed with Interscope Records. The move followed his dispute with Empire and marked his transition from an independent-distribution arrangement into a major-label relationship.[27]

Lucki's music has been characterized by sparse and atmospheric production, subdued vocal delivery, melodic phrasing and introspective songwriting. His early work was associated with "alternative trap", a term used to distinguish his music from the drill-oriented sound that dominated much of Chicago hip hop in the early 2010s.[1][2]

A defining feature of Lucki's music is his vocal delivery, which critics have described as restrained, dry, raspy, detached and sometimes close to monotone. Rather than relying on conventional high-energy rap delivery, he frequently performs in a low-key style that reinforces the hazy atmosphere of his production.[16]

His early recordings were influenced by Chicago rap while also incorporating electronic and cloud-rap elements. Over time, his production became increasingly minimal and atmospheric, particularly on Freewave 3 and Wake Up Lucki.[3][16]

During the 2020s, Lucki increasingly incorporated more polished trap production and conventional rap structures. This shift was particularly apparent on Flawless Like Me, S*x M*ney Dr*gs, Gemini! and Dr*gs R Bad, as his audience and commercial profile expanded.[5][26]

Lucki's songwriting frequently addresses relationships, loneliness, ambition, emotional detachment, fame and substance use. His lyrics often combine autobiographical material with short, fragmented observations rather than extended narratives.[3][16]

Freewave 3 was particularly noted for its treatment of addiction, heartbreak and trauma. Pitchfork described the project as a stripped-down and intimate account of Lucki's experiences, with short lyrical phrases used to convey emotional states without lengthy exposition.[3]

Later projects retained many of these themes while increasingly incorporating subjects associated with financial success, luxury, relationships and the pressures accompanying a larger public profile. Critics have consequently described a transition from the vulnerable and inward-looking writing of his early work toward a more confident and commercially oriented presentation.[26]

Lucki has identified Chief Keef, Future, Kanye West and Babyface Ray as influences, while also citing Erykah Badu, Prince and The Notorious B.I.G. among artists he listened to while growing up.[1]

Critical coverage has also connected Lucki's musical development to the broader Chicago hip-hop scene, particularly the influence of Chief Keef, while noting similarities between Lucki's treatment of addiction and emotional detachment and the themes associated with Future's music.[28]

Legacy and influence

Lucki has been associated with the development of the internet-based underground rap scene that expanded during the 2010s. His early releases predated the commercial expansion of SoundCloud rap and established a combination of hazy production, melodic phrasing and deliberately understated delivery that later became common in parts of underground hip hop.[3]

By the mid-2020s, Lucki had developed from a largely underground Chicago artist into a commercially successful cult figure. Pitchfork described him in 2026 as a major cult hero and noted the growth of his audience, chart presence and industry recognition while emphasizing the continuity between his early music and later work.[26]

Personal life

Lucki became a father in 2016. His experiences with relationships and family have been discussed in interviews and have appeared repeatedly as themes in his songwriting.[29]
