The Traveller (pinyin: Yi ren zhi xia) is a Chinese mainland fantasy action film released in 2024, adapted from the online comic Under the Alien created by Mi Er. The film is directed by Wuershan and Xia Peng, and stars Hu Xianxu, Vanda Margaf, Feng Shaofeng, Qiao Zhenyu, Song Ningfeng, Na Ran, Nar Naqian, Lan Xiya, Wu Jiakai, Xiong Wenwen, Cheng Yijie, Liu Chunyan, Sang Ping, Liu Xingchen, Sui Yongliang, Han Pengyi, Feng Li and other actors, with Wang Jinsong as a special guest star.[3] It will be released in mainland China on July 26, 2024.[4][5]

Plot

The plot tells the story of Zhang Chulan who becomes the target of competition in the alien world because of his grandfather's inheritance. In order to find out the truth about his grandfather's death, he embarks on an adventure with his fake sister Feng Baobao.

Production

The film will be produced as a trilogy [6], and the casting recruitment will start in December 2020[7]. Wuershan opened an "alien training camp" for the casting and actor training of the film. In addition to the brutal actor audition, the actors in the camp also received courses such as traditional martial arts, traditional culture, professional performance, and regular makeup trials and performance reports.[8] The film was approved by the State Film Administration in September 2021.[9], and the main shooting began in Qingdao Oriental Movie Metropolis in October 2021[10][11][12][13]. The entire film was shot using IMAX special equipment.[14]

The Traveller was released on 26 July 2024, in China.[16]

Reception

On the opening weekend, its box office was ranked as No.1 in the Chinese market.[17] By the 6th day, its gross reached $70 million.[18] After its worldwide release, the film grossed $373.9 million out of a $110.3 million budget.[19]

Critical response

The film received 8.0 out of 10 points on the Chinese review website Douban.com.[20]

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 60% of 10 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 6.3/10.
