Is there any good way to find relay servers on the Fediverse? Specifically so I can subscribe to remote posts about a specific hashtag or group of hashtags to federate on my server?

I know I tried finding some a while ago but the way they were handled with sign-ups and requests were a bit strange to me so I gave up.

@lianna @FediTips @feditips WithGotoSocial it's easy to subscribe to relays, it works great. The best implementation of relays in every #fediverse software I tried.

For Hashtags I use fedi.buzz relay. For example https://relay.fedi.buzz/tag/gotosocial subscribes to everything #gotosocial.

Also general purpose relays https://relay.infosec.exchange/actor, https://relay.toot.io/actor and
https://rel.re/actor work without problems. For these you may want to create "matchers", they select which posts from the "big river of toots" the relays offer your instance will use, so you won't get "flooded"

@r @FediTips Thank you!!

If I use a fedibuzz tag relay, do I still need to use the matcher, or is it safe to use GTS' 'match all' option for those? Intuitively, I'd think it's the latter, since the tag-specific URL I am using should already filter to only posts with that hashtag, right?

@lianna For Fedibuzz just "Match posts by default", it only contains posts for this hashtag (like in the picture). For general purpose relay like rel.re you may want to use matchers, if you set "Match posts by default" there will be a lot of stuff filling your instance. Just add a hashtag or a word, set "Match whole word" and you're done.

@r Awesome, thank you!

That explains why the Fedibuzz relay I subscribed to ages ago did not result in a noticeable uptick in federated posts... oop. I had been discarding all posts this entire time. :derp: I forgot to set that 'match all' checkbox tick.

Now if only there was a way to see whether it works; some kind of statistics view about ingested posts per relay … hmm.

Either way thank you very much, this was super helpful. :smile:

Edit: just saw the other replies. Leaving this but consider it just another +1 for fedibuzz, lol.

Not sure if this will help, but I've had good success with hashtag-specific relay subscription through fedi.buzz

https://relay.fedi.buzz/

Combined with a good-sized following list, this has made my GTS feed quite full and nicely tailored to what I want. Still having to do a lot of muting/filtering of accounts but that's to be expected, esp. at the start.
