Reorganized the preference pane system. It purposefully no longer remembers the selected pane, which is more in-line with the actual Lisa, and settings apps on other OSs.

I also added the “Set all convenience settings to defaults” option from the original Lisa. Added it to the animations pane too.

🇯🇵 Japan tried to build an operating system for the entire world, then the US government intervened

「 an operating system designed at the University of Tokyo in 1984 was ambitious enough to try to replace the file system with a hypermedia document model, run on a custom Japanese CPU architecture, and encode 1.5 million characters, only to have a US trade report single it out as an unfair trade barrier in 1989 」

:amiga: Amiga? Arduino? A MeagerBall gets the Uno Bouncing.

When the iconic “Boing Ball” first debuted 40 years ago, it was a wonder to behold. There was nothing like it in the home compuing world upto that time, and it showed that Commodore’s new “Amiga” was a powerhouse sure to last the test of time.

⁉️Forty years later, the Amiga as we knew it then might not be with us anymore but [Mark Wilson] is recreating its iconic demo on a microcontroller — but not just any microcontroller. “AMeagerBall” is an Arduino Uno exclusive, and it even tells the time.⁉️

Hi #retrocomputing experts! One of my colleagues at the French national archives wonders what these tapes are!

Bonus point if you have any clue about how to retrieve data from them...

TEIL 3/4: Wie funktioniert eigentlich die Zifferneingabe bei der Z1? 🤔 Wie rechnet der erste frei programmierbare Computer? Und wie werden Dezimalzahlen in das duale Zahlensystem übertragen?

Stuck gold today!

Picked up a ~1998 'KTX 1000' laptop.

A whopping 200mhz Pentium MMX with 32mb of ram and a 3GB HDD!

Boots straight to Windows 98 and all features work beautifully.

Now time to play with it. 😁

It's going to be pretty repetitive if I post every time I add an improvement to martypc.net , because i'm unemployed currently and have nothing else to do but push new features every day.

but this is a total transformation.

the new carousel interface is now live.
you can now select VGA and Adlib cards on PC.
you can plug in a gamepad and play Commander Keen in EGA.
it's like a real actual emulator now

My workshop at LRC on playing with UNIX V4 was a great success!

Everyone loved the teletype and terminal. In the manner of the day, I gave manuals to teach the system and ed (@ed1conf), and we now have a cohort of new ed users. A few groups solved or got close to solving my challenge of backporting the obfuscated mullender.c program from V7 to V4. Surprisingly with a dozen or so people on at once, UNIX handled the load fantastically.

actual SGI O2 owners with experience in O2 boards:

one of the infamous problems the O2 has involves the machine "frying" when the board/backplane is removed while the machine is plugged in.

i've never seen an electrical explanation of which components fail when this happens, and if the machine can be resuscitated by replacing specified SMD components on the logic board

i picked up a dead O2 a few years ago, which *seems* to exhibit the classic signs of pulled-board syndrome. (fan blips once on power toggle, doesn't spin fully, and machine never makes it to POST). rather than seeing this turned into e-waste or spare parts, i'd like to rebuild it.

Yesterday I was invited to a special demonstration of the GIER computer, the first transistorised computer in Denmark from 1962, at the Dansk Datahistorisk Forening.

The machine is restored to working condition (unfortunately the console typewriter is broken and replaced by a Raspberry Pi) and I was allowed to operate the GIER - it already had an OS and an Algol compiler - and the paper tape reader.

What a great experience - thanks a lot to everyone involved!

I remember wishing I could upgrade to 2400 bps, and I remember thinking it would be really neat to have a hard drive for my computer. In a #scifi novel I wrote in my teens, a floppy drive that handled multiple disks was an advanced technology.
