After long, LONG discussions on the matter... the only REASONABLE and consistent conclusion/criteria is that it must contained leavened bread. It can either be a roll/bun cut, or two pieces of bread on either side of ANY filling. A rock with two loaves of bread on either side qualifies as a sandwich, and a stick of dynamite on a hot dog bun would also be a sandwich.
