File:Galle Gladiators.png

[edit]

I've removed File:Galle Gladiators.png from the 2020, 2021, and 2022 Galle Gladiators seasons per terms of WP:NFC#UUI #17. We do not use a team's non-free logo for individual season articles. Since the rationales you placed on the image's description page are invalid for the same WP:NFC#UUI #17 reason, I've removed them from the image. I've tagged the image as orphaned and lacking rationales for any use. Please do not restore the image to those season articles. If you have concerns about this, please feel free to ask me or WT:NFC for clarification. We'll be happy to answer any questions you may have. Thanks, --Hammersoft (talk) 15:19, 26 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Perhaps I wasn't clear. This is clearly inappropriate usage. WP:NFC#UUI #17 is unequivocally clear about this. This logo is NOT the logo of the 2020 Galle Gladiators' season. It is the logo of the team. As such, it's usage is utterly inappropriate for a season article. I am reverting your re-addition of this logo to that season article as well as your reversions to File:Galle Gladiators.png. Your change to the File:Galle Gladiators.png makes the rationale claim the logo "is the logo for 2020 Galle Gladiators season.". This is clearly inaccurate. It is the logo of the team. There's no wiggle room on this. I know you want to retain the image, but its placement on season articles is completely inappropriate. I am reverting your changes. Your pathway forward here isn't to restore it yet again and not discuss the issue. Discuss this at WT:NFC first and gain consensus for the changes you want to make. Your only hope for retaining this image is perhaps in a historical logos section on the team's article if there's some prose that can be supported by reliable, secondary sources, NOT on the specific seasons. If you want to do that, I suggest you start a discussion at Talk:Galle Gallants. If I can be of any help, let me know. But please, do NOT restore it to the season articles yet again. Thank you, --Hammersoft (talk) 15:43, 26 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Non-free images of existing places

[edit]

Ravana, I wanted to take a moment to discuss non-free images of existing facilities with you. I saw that you uploaded File:Namibia Cricket Ground 2025.jpg indicating that it was not replaceable with free media because "A free-licensed alternative is not available.". So there's a couple of things at play here. First, we already have a free image of those grounds at File:Namibia National Cricket Ground - Windhoek.jpg. I grant it's not as good of an image, but the decision on free or non-free isn't based upon the quality of an image. That's a lesser issue though. The main issue is WP:NFCC#1. That policy clearly states "Non-free content is used only where no free equivalent is available, or could be created, that would serve the same encyclopedic purpose." (bold emphasis mine). This is an existing facility that is still in use. There is no reason why someone could not take an image of the facility from within the grounds. This makes a non-free image of the facility for use anywhere on the project a violation of WP:NFCC#1.

There's been a number of debates over the years about the idea of whether or not we can use a non-free image until a free image is found/made. The decision has always come down to no, we can't. We have to wait for the free image to become available, and not use non-free works in the meantime.

As a result of this, I have removed File:Namibia Cricket Ground 2025.jpg from Namibia Cricket Ground and tagged it as orphaned and replaceable fair use. Failing presentation of a policy compliant reason why this image should be allowed, the image will be deleted in seven days.

I appreciate your enthusiasm in editing here. I really do! We need more coverage of the subjects you are working on. --Hammersoft (talk) 20:13, 27 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:2026 Namibia T20I Tri-Nation Series captains.jpg

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:2026 Namibia T20I Tri-Nation Series captains.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Whpq (talk) 22:09, 27 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Whpq:,
Thank you for tagging File:2026 Namibia T20I Tri-Nation Series captains.jpg.
I have updated the file description page to correct the template mismatch and clarified the NFCC#8 purpose and NFCC#2 commercial opportunity parameters.
Additionally, I created a dedicated "Background" section in the article 2026 Namibia T20I Tri-Nation Series that explicitly details the official captains' trophy launch event, establishing contextual significance within the article text.
Could you please review the updated rationale and article text to let me know if it now satisfies WP:NFCC criteria? If it still fails policy, please let me know and I will gladly remove the image and the background section from the article myself.
Thanks for your time and guidance! RavanaTALK 02:05, 28 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Its use is still decorative. A reader's understanding of the article is not impaired if you remove the image. -- Whpq (talk) 03:33, 28 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
