From what I can see most EV drivers have no problem with paying some kind of road tax which would have otherwise come out of the taxes on fossil fuel use.
The issue is the method and the amount. IMO this should be something proportional to the annual mileage and could be paid at insurance time or from a tax on commercial/public charging stations.
The reason governments have not opted for this simple method and made it a direct and exorbitant charge is because they want to penalize EV drivers for not burning fossil fuels. ie these governments are captives of the fossil industry.
Im looking at you Alberta and Saskatchewan!
