A bit more Colorado - with Steam!

Here's a short clip of Engine # 9, on the Georgetown Loop, a narrow-gauge railroad, serving the gold and silver mines, near SIlver Plume in the Rocky Mountains. Seen in the photo crossing the Devil's Gate High Bridge.

Number 9 - Georgetown Loop

Although lost to Google+ (Collection), scenes from this railroad and engine were the centerpiece of a diaspora* thread replicating what was on G+, a riff on all things "Number 9" from Beatles (#9) to Jethro Tull ("Locomotive Breath") to Mozart. MIA/RIP now.

An einigen Stellen, wie in der Nähe von Velden oder Rupprechtstegen, ergeben sich für Fotografen und Eisenbahnfreunde beeindruckende Blicke durch mehrere Tunnelportale gleichzeitig.

Today's historic photo of the day: Queensland Railways 1067mm narrow gauge 1-C diesel-mechanical #locomotive DL4 sits in the yard at Townsville, Qld, July 22 1986.

The first of the four DL class Gardner engined locos, DL1, was built in 1939. Diesel railmotors and railcars pre-dated it, and there were some earlier diesel locos on a dam construction railway in NSW, a timber tramway in Victoria and maybe elsewhere, but otherwise, DL1 may have been Australia's first diesel loco on a public railway.

Edgar H Brownbill, (who was actually a distant relative of mine), was a Commissioner of Victorian Railways from 1935 until 1967, and Chief Commissioner from 1956 until 1967, a period that saw dieselisation and the Albury-Melbourne standard gauge

Today's historic photo of the day: The interior of the driving cab of VLine diesel #locomotive S303 at an open day at South Dynon depot, West Melbourne, Vic, July 5 1987.

Clyde Engineering, EMD's Australian licensee, delivered the first ten S classes (including S303) in 1957-58, and eight more in 1960-61. Based on EMD's F7, they brought GM streamlined bulldog noses to single-ended locos in Victoria with some minor modifications for local conditions such as loading gauge and broad gauge bogies.

NSW Rail bought 165 of these 48 class diesels from AE Goodwin between 1959 and 1970 making them the most numerous type of diesel #locomotive anywhere in Australia. With 6-cylinder Alco 251B engines and GE or AEI generators and motors, they ran on all sorts of trains from branch line goods. shunts, coal, grain and even mainline goods and passengers.

D1 was the first of a fleet of 8 such locos, built by Comeng in 1950/51 for Australian Iron & Steel to run on their Port Kembla steelworks railway. These locos not only ran within the steelworks, they also ran on main lines in the Port Kembla area, and D1 was the first diesel locomotive to run on a main line anywhere in Australia.

Between 1951 and 1967, Commonwealth Railways purchased a fleet of 47 GM class diesel locos to enable the replacement of steam on the Trans Australian Railway between Port Pirie, SA and Kalgoorlie, WA. Based on the American EMD F7 design, they were among Australia's first mainline diesels.

Today's historic photo of the day: NSW SRA mainline Alco diesel #locomotive 4479 hauls the northbound Cooma Mail across the trestle bridge that crosses Bumbalong Road and Colyers Creek near Colinton, NSW, early December 1984.

Colinton is in the Monaro region of southern New South Wales, just south of Canberra and 388km from Sydney on the Goulburn to Bombala railway line.

Today's historic photo of the day: The candy livery on Alco diesel #locomotive 4875 stands out on a very dark afternoon against a backdrop of ferocious storm clouds at Henty, NSW, January 29, 1984.

It's not often the speed of a shunting 48 blurs an image, but those storm clouds made things REALLY dark.

Henty, a small town in the NSW Riverina, is 580km from Sydney on the main South line, and was then the junction for a 53km long branch line to Rand, from which 4875 had just returned that day.

Today's historic photo of the day: Forty years ago today, ten-month-old VLine diesel G512 sits at South Dynon #locomotive depot, West Melbourne, September 28 1985. G512 is coupled to two T class locos, the second of which is T347.

South Dynon Depot, 2.5km north-west of Melbourne, was purpose-built by the Victorian Railways in 1961 as a servicing and stabling depot for diesel and electric locomotives. Whilst there are no longer any electric locos, it still serves as a diesel loco depot today.
