This is actually the more serious point and important not to gloss over this direct attack. This is what Charlie Angus was talking about yesterday (I will link again below).

“The argument that Trump invaded Canada today is more compelling than many realize,” posted Abramson. “The border between Canada and the U.S. runs through the middle of Lake Ontario. By claiming to have the power to rename the entire lake, Trump is claiming the lake. That's invasion by declaration.” According to Abramson, while many are being dismissive and even joking about Trump’s order, “the practicalities of what just happened today will hit like a ton of bricks in a matter of hours or days — not weeks. Trump declaring sovereign authority over a body of water half owned by Canada is a big f—— deal.”

“Look at what actually happened this week. Trump announced a deal. Carney read the fine print and said no. … And now, EU leaders, Latin America’s Leaders, know exactly what to do. Drop-kick him into outer space as Carney did. Publicly. Calmly. Factually. With receipts of why you kicked America’s dementia addled, rapist, 34-time felon, Mafia State leader in the face. It works. Every time.”

Canada open to renaming Great Lakes to end Trade War.

As a Canadian graphic designer with insider info, here is a draft of the new names our Prime Minister has proposed to Trump.

“To Trump, and to the people cheering him on: you have picked a fight with the one neighbour on earth whose entire military history is a warning against picking that fight. We show up smiling. We show up in shorts. We show up with a case of beer, a snowblower, and a genuine hope that this all gets fixed on a handshake. And if it doesn’t, we show up the other way, and there is no historical record, anywhere, of that going well for the people across from us.“

What he said.
Trump, Republicans, fascists; you were warned.

“On Friday night the trade talks collapsed. On Saturday morning, the 50 percent tariffs kicked in on about 20 billion dollars of Canadian goods, everything from beer and cheese to hockey sticks, under Section 338 of a 1930 tariff law nobody had touched since 1949. Trump went on Truth Social and posted that Canada wants the benefits of being a state without being one. Mark Carney stood up in Ottawa, got asked why it sounded like he was going to war, and said, “Because we were attacked.” Dollar-for-dollar retaliation starts September 8. Steel, dairy, appliances, farm equipment, pulp and paper, electronics.

Angus Reid polled the country over the weekend. Seventy-six percent of #Canadians say walking away from the table was the right call. In a country that can’t agree on whether milk goes in a bag, three out of four of us just agreed on a fight.

I want to explain to our #Americans friends, and I do mean friends, what that number means.”

“And Americans should support his decision, because the more people fold to Trump, the more Trump demands that others fold. If he can steamroll Canada and force them to bend the knee, that will encourage him to redouble his efforts to force blue states to bend the knee. The attack on Canada’s sovereignty is, after all, an extension of his efforts to erode US state sovereignty by, for example, withholding public safety grants to force blue states to allow federal #election interference.

#Trump believes that he is and should be the sole authority on earth for everything. Each victory encourages him to seize more, demand more, expand the limits of his power. In contrast, each defeat makes him look weaker and easier to defy. In this case, #Canadian resistance will directly stiffen resistance in states with longtime tied to Canada, like #Maine and #Michigan—both of which, as it happens, are the site of major Senate elections.”

“Trump demanded a sweeping veto power over Canada’s trade deals with other countries. Carney correctly identified this as an attack on his nation’s sovereignty. Trump has been saying for over a year that he wants to annex Canada and turn it into the 51st state. He appears to have seen the trade deal as a step towards forcing Canada to submit to his authority, rather than as a mutually beneficial agreement between neighbors. “They asked too much and they offered too little,” Carney said of the US negotiators. “You’re at war when you get attacked. We got attacked.”

Again, the trade war will be painful. No one wants to pay more for goods; no one wants people on both sides of the border to lose their jobs. But Carney believes that knuckling under to #Trump would put #Canada at the mercy of an erratic dictatorial regime with no accountability to Canadians.”

[Note: ICYMI, a poll this weekend shows 76% of Canadians support Carney walking away.]

“Fellow resisters,

There is no place I would rather be at this time than in the forward trench with my fellow Canadians.

From one end of this great nation to the other, I have seen the determination and pride to live up to the great legacy we have as fighters of fascism.

The Juno Beach gene is in each of us.

As Winston Churchill said to Adolf Hitler in the dark days of 1941:

“We ask no favours of the enemy. We seek from them no compunction. We will have no truce or parley with you, or the grisly gang who work your wicked will.

You do your worst, and we will do our best.”

That is the spirit we need to show now.

As Canadians, we will do our part and do our best.“ -

@pluralistic has written about this. We have economic weapons. We need leaders with the courage and strategic sense to use them.

A winning trade war strategy for Canada medium.com/@doctorow/https-plu…

Now that we're at trade war, individual acts and solidarity-building are important, and they include pushing our governments to do things we can't do individually, such as pushing for independence from the US-owned credit card and money-transfer systems, US -owned oil and gas companies, US-owned news and social media, etc.

So far, Carney and most of the premiers have been decidedly weak on the big picture parts.

Excellent read! @pluralistic has been pushing the idea below and it's good to see another champion for it:

"If Trump is now ripping up our trade agreements and attacking us, we should be looking at a full rollback of the CUSMA digital chapter. It’s time to reclaim the policy space we gave up, like the ability to decide when sensitive Canadian data must remain under Canadian jurisdiction or using public procurement to build domestic cloud and software capacity."

“Canada walked into the stadium without studying the game film of the opponent.”

A good read. Another great quote:

“In a nutshell, they are asking us to give away the essence of sovereignty.”

…the first shots of Trump’s second-term trade war were aimed at some of America’s closest friends and neighbors. This was more than unnerving to some members of Trump’s own team. …in the White House it was said there were now two types of people: those who loved tariffs and those who had lost the will to fight.

🇯🇵 Japan tried to build an operating system for the entire world, then the US government intervened

「 an operating system designed at the University of Tokyo in 1984 was ambitious enough to try to replace the file system with a hypermedia document model, run on a custom Japanese CPU architecture, and encode 1.5 million characters, only to have a US trade report single it out as an unfair trade barrier in 1989 」

Should Canada go on offense and implement an export tax on oil and gas exports on September 1st?

(This is my personal idea, not anything I have heard considered officially yet)

This poll is open to anyone, Canadian or otherwise. Please leave a comment if you’re comfortable telling folks where you are from and why you chose the answer you did.
