The Orange County cross-country championships offered local distance runners a chance to measure themselves against their regional competition over the weekend, with several seizing the opportunity to do so at Oak Canyon Park.

Huntington Beach junior Rebecca VanPeteghen led all local girls, placing sixth in a personal-best time of 16 minutes 56.1 seconds in the sweepstakes race on Saturday.

Senior Sydney Rubio, once a Nike Cross Nationals qualifier as a freshman for the Oilers, competed in back-to-back weeks for the first time this season. She finished 13th in 17:26.8.

It was a blustery morning; Rubio said she stayed behind the pack to ward off the wind. She has been impressed with the rise of VanPeteghen, who last year qualified for state as an individual.

“She’s just been shaving seconds off every race,” Rubio said of VanPeteghen. “She’s very focused, and on top of every single thing, and locked in. She’s ready to have a big breakthrough.”

JSerra beat San Clemente, 59-99, for the girls’ sweepstakes title, the Lions led by the race winner in senior Reese Holley, who clocked in at 16:18.3.

Trabuco Hills topped Woodbridge, 55-69, for the boys’ sweepstakes championship. Senior Aidan Antonio won the race in 14:10.4 to claim a second consecutive individual county crown.

Area schools flooded the leaderboard in the open and small schools varsity races.

Newport Harbor freshman Lyle Torribio ran an area-best 15:00.6 in placing third to key the Sailors’ second-place showing in the boys’ open race.

Cabal noted she did not feel well and skipped eating before the competition.

“I didn’t think I was going to do this today, actually, at all,” Cabal said. “It’s always the worst races you surprise yourself.”

On Friday afternoon, Laguna Beach’s boys’ and girls’ teams swept the small schools titles.

“We met expectations,” Laguna Beach girls’ cross-country coach Steve Lalim said. “We went in wanting to win, and both the boys and girls competed with that mindset. The goal was to put ourselves in position to win, and both teams delivered. Now, we carry that momentum into the elimination races and keep competing at a high level.”

Corona del Mar senior Grace DeCicco (second, 19:13.6) topped the local contingent in the girls’ small schools race, which was won with ease by Esperanza senior Lesley Ledesma in 17:50.7.
