Two hours until the scheduled lift-off of the Nancy Grace #Roman Space Telescope at 13:26 CEST. This will be a fabulous telescope, similar to #ESAEuclid but different enough for these two missions to complement each other.

We are keeping our fingers crossed for a launch hopefully as flawless as that of our #Euclid 3 years ago.

With this first collection, #Euclid starts dominating the search for early Universe #quasars. This is no wonder: Euclid's wide survey provides unprecedented sensitivity at wavelengths into the near-infrared, which are key to identifying these rare accreting early black holes.

Forecasts predict that in Euclid data even earlier quasars should be found: likely beyond z=8 (650 million years after the Big Bang) and possibly even z=9 (550 million years).

A year ago, #Euclid's first small data release 'Q1' provided data for 63 deg² of sky to the world. Now an 'Astronomy & Astrophysics Special Issue' has been published with 41 articles about and around this release:

euclid-ec.org/q1-special-issue…

Many of these articles were made public as preprints at the time of the Q1 release, but since then we added about a dozen extra, and they are now all peer reviewed. Open access, open science.

Last week, we announced that ESA and the Euclid Consortium released a massive image of the Milky Way's heart. This 'Q2' data release contains images of 60 million stars. A great primer on this image comes from the EC's Chris Pattison:

We congratulate Vasily Belokurov, Amina Helmi, and Rodrigo Ibata for receiving the

2026 Kavli Prize in Astrophysics

"for uncovering the fossil evidence of past mergers proving that the Milky Way galaxy was built through hierarchical accretion"!

All three happen to be members of our Euclid Consortium 🎉

#ESAEuclid was designed to study 'invisible' dark energy. One of the methods is to use the effect of weak gravitational lensing to trace dark matter structures – also invisible in direct images – across cosmic time.

Ahead of its first major data release in November and first cosmology results in 2027, a first example of dark matter structure in the galaxy cluster Abell 2390, made visible with #Euclid data, has been published:

Data from #ESAEuclid uncovered physics deep inside red dwarf stars. Scientists found a 'brightness gap' in #stars of a globular cluster, pointing to structural instability at certain masses.

While #ESA's #Gaia mission had found this process in relatively nearby stars, scientists from @stsci.edu for the first time showed this for a very old globular cluster, observed by #Euclid.

Would you like to be part of citizen science astronomy? We invite you to classify gravitational lens candidates in so-far unreleased #ESAEuclid data: "Space Warps – ESA Euclid DR1".

3000 volunteers have already made nearly 900,000 classifications, yet 70% of the project are still to be done.

#ESAEuclid was launched 1000 days ago. 🥳

#ESA has already released #Euclid's Q1 dataset, Q2 (in the Galactic Bulge) and ~1900 deg² extragalactic data in DR1 will follow later this year. All instruments are healthy, satellite is working fine.

We also printed it scaled down by a factor 4, but this 1:64 scale version, while cute, is really at the limit of printability for the smallest parts.

We asked amateur astronomy colleagues to create for us a colour-image in visible light of the same region. They delivered!

Also, we added a comparison to 2MASS, the so-far go-to near-infrared all-sky survey. There are differences...

We also created a viewer tool for the Dark Cloud to see all images: Euclid, visible, and 2MASS – for you to zoom and pan around.

Here's the background and access to all comparison sliders and tools:

Do you remember the 'Dark Cloud' image of LDN 1641 from #ESAEuclid that was released by #ESA two weeks ago? We now added a comparison to a ground-based image in visible light:

If you are thinking: this Dark Cloud image looks quite nice as a thumbnail. In full resolution it has 11,000 x 12,500 pixels! #Euclid's strength is simultaneous fine sampling and observation of large patches of the sky.

We are releasing seven new scientific publications today, based on our Q1 data release earlier this year. All revolve around various aspects of galaxy evolution. They are accompanied by two new image collages:

The first one is a #Euclid-based re-creation of the classical 'morphology tuning fork' of galaxy shapes – the second a near-infrared view into the 'dark cloud' LDN 1641, released by #ESA.
