💁🏻‍♀️ TIL: A team of scientists engineered an electrospun purple #fabric that reflects about 88% of sunlight and stays cooler than white #cotton in outdoor tests.

In direct #sun, it ran up to 6º C (11º F) cooler than dyed purple cotton, and on simulated skin it beat uncovered skin by nearly 8º C. The lightweight #textile also kept its cooling effect after 50 wash cycles and showed strong durability under #UV exposure.

The solar eclipse of August 12, 2026, from Lausanne, Switzerland. ☀️🌑
The eclipse reached 91%, and I captured it from the beginning to maximum, just before the Sun disappeared behind the mountains.
This composite is made from 36 × 120-second videos, each stacked and processed individually.
Lunt 60mm + ZWO ASI678MM.
420mm, f7, 36 × 3'960 frames (142,560 frames total).

#sofi #sun #eclipse

Amazing session yesterday capturing the solar eclipse! ☀️🌑

4 telescopes + 1 camera, and about 1.5 TB of data to process. This is going to take a few days… 😅

Here’s a little preview in the meantime. More to come soon!

I’m in Spain. I came here to see the solar eclipse that happened yesterday. It was absolutely one of the most incredible things I’ve ever seen in my life.
Suddenly, it got dark and cold everywhere. The wind picked up. For a moment, you felt very small, and there was this strange sense of… awe, almost even fear. And that’s despite the fact that I understand the science behind a solar eclipse.

So if I, a person living in the 21st century, can feel something like that, I can only imagine what ancient people must have felt when they saw the Sun suddenly disappear from the sky.

It was an absolutely incredible experience, and I would recommend it to everyone if you ever get the chance to see one.

I’m attaching a photo showing the Sun’s corona and the very first ray of sunlight appearing from behind the Moon.

If you can't see the complete #eclipse today, I can reassure you that the photos of the #sun arriving in my TL look just like round #pancakes.
Here’s my suggestion for young and old alike: make two pancakes. Spread dark jam on the slightly smaller one. Drag it extremely slowly over the larger one. Then use your mouth to create a Black Hole! Slurp the sun, the moon ... Cosmic experience guaranteed! 😋🤭

Weil es so kompliziert ist, hier nochmal eine unserer aufwendigen Visualisierungen, die (natürlich nur stark vereinfacht) den Unterschied zwischen einer partiellen und einer totalen Sonnenfinsternis zeigt.

I did manage to get a shot of the ISS flying across the sun :)

Blue Skies, sunlight, and puffy white clouds
Nice day in New York, even indoors with sun rather than water streaming in.

The past few weeks, in many places around the world, have seen extreme weather, plus wildfire, flooding, tornados & heat domes.
So, in between the rain and heat and smoky air, a rare day comes along after the storms, and miraculously, a day like these.

Three random images from walks on the nice days. Always welcome when we see them. Here's inside, outside, & on the street.

Blue Skies....

May they come our way more often.

Posting in the Fediverse since last week: @uksolarphysics! 🇬🇧 ☀️

The UK Solar Physics community (UKSP) is a Specialist Scientific Group affiliated to the Royal Astronomical Society. They regularly provide relevant news and nuggets both to their members as well as the international solar physics community at large via uksolphys.org/

If you're interested in the research of the Sun, our closest star, at all, consider following them for their announcements either at uksolphys.org/news/recent-news…, or via their UKSP newsletter (mailing list), or now directly here via their Mastodon account @uksolarphysics

Maybe don't expect them to interact a lot, but if you *are* here for their very useful announcements, it is now really easy to follow and also boost those. So, a warm welcome to @uksolarphysics 🌞

Now available for viewing for free on Youtube: "Sunrise - At the Frontiers of Feasibility"

youtube.com/watch?v=XPIW-Ev4sb…

A one-and-a-half hour documentary on how an international consortium led by the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research is planning the flight of the most capable solar observatory ever to leave the Earth's surface. Carried by a stratospheric balloon, the observatory Sunrise III is set to fly from Sweden to Canada in the summer of 2022. Free from disturbances of the Earth's atmosphere, under conditions resembling space, it is expected to continuously observe the solar surface with unprecedented precision during its five-day flight. The anticipated dataset will influence astrophysics for decades to come. The film follows the Sunrise III team during the final sixteen months before the flight.

A film by Janek Totaro and Johannes Kohout of Akinema Filmproduction see en.akinema.com/sunrisedocument…

We couldn't have hoped for a better advertisement for this year’s public lecture series than last night's spectacular show of northern lights!

The talks will deal with all the exciting aspects in the fiery relationship between the Sun and the Earth (in German). So if you want to learn more about the Sun, the aurora borealis, the dangers of solar storms, about space weather forecasting and more, join us for

"Im Feuerwerk der Sonne" mps.mpg.de/im-feuerwerk-der-so…

The series kicks off with the first talk by Sami Solanki on Thursday, 12 February 2026 at 19:00h in the auditorium at MPS Göttingen (OSM: openstreetmap.org/way/25391800…)
