Eine historische Dampflokomotive der Baureihe 023 durchfährt eine malerische Tunnelkette im Pegnitztal. Die Region in der Fränkischen Schweiz ist bekannt für ihre reizvolle Landschaft und die anspruchsvolle Eisenbahnstrecke, die sich entlang des Flusses windet.

Today's historic photo of the day: Looking across to the southbound platform at the #railway station at Burradoo, NSW, November 9 1985.

Burradoo is a small station in the NSW Southern Highlands just south of Bowral, 139km from Sydney on the NSW main South line. Back in 1985, just a few Goulburn or Moss Vale line trains called each day, and the station was very rudimentary, with original large nameboards but very few facilities - not even any shelter or seats.

Today's historic photo of the day: The #railway station at Healesville, Victoria, December 21 1986.

Healesville is 64km east of Melbourne at the terminus of a Victorian Railways broad gauge branch line from Lilydale. The line from Lilydale had been closed and passenger and freight services withdrawn six years beforehand in 1980. When this photo was taken, the station was disused and looked sad and neglected.

Today's historic photo of the day: Exactly 40 years ago today, we see the #railway station at Blayney, NSW, January 26 1986.

Blayney is in Central West NSW, 290km from Sydney on the NSW Main West line. The station is today served by the daily Sydney to Dubbo Central West XPT and by the weekly Broken Hill Outback XPLorer.

It is also the junction for the currently mothballed cross-country line to Demondrille via Cowra, and until 1983, was where passengers changed into Cowra line railmotors.

Today's historic photo of the day: Exactly 38 years ago today we see the former #railway station at Yea, Vic, January 25 1988.

Yea is in north-central Victoria about 135km by rail from Melbourne on an indirect route via the main line north to Tallarook then eastwards on the Mansfield branch line. The railway reached Yea in 1883 and was extended further east to Mansfield in 1891. A branch line from Cathkin to Alexandra opened in 1909.

Barnawartha is in North-Eastern Victoria about 280km from Melbourne on the main Melbourne to Albury railway. The station opened in 1873 and served passengers until the early/mid '80s when the last passenger trains called. Although nameboards, bins and bench seats were still in place in early 1988, the platform loop track had been lifted just over four months beforehand

In the 1980s, Queensland Rail electrified a number of their 1067mm gauge lines in Central Queensland to enable the massive coal haulage task to be performed by electric traction.

Today's historic photo of the day: A view of the #railway station at Buangor, Vic, January 24 1987.

Buangor is 188km west of Melbourne on the broad gauge line from Melbourne to Ararat. At that time, this was the main Melbourne-Adelaide railway. Whilst passenger trains had ceased calling at Buangor some years beforehand, passenger and goods trains still then ran express through here and the station was still manned to control the mechanically interlocked crossing loop.

Today's historic photo of the day: Exactly 39 years ago today, we see an impressive selection of semaphore signals at Tailem Bend, SA, January 17 1987.

Tailem Bend is on the Murray River, 120km south-east of Adelaide on the main line to Melbourne. In 1987 Tailem Bend was still a #railway town. It was a major depot and junction station for two branch lines, one east to Pinnaroo, and the other to Karoonda where it further branched into lines to Peebinga, Waikerie and Barmera/Loxton/Yinkanie.

Today's historic photo of the day: Double-deck electric multiple unit set V11 departs Civic station headed for Newcastle, NSW, June 9 1985.

Civic station, in central Newcastle, 167km from Sydney, was the penultimate station on the 4km-long Broadmeadow to Newcastle line. In 1985, the #railway outlook in Newcastle was optimistic with the line from Sydney having been electrified just the year beforehand and service frequencies boosted.

Today's historic photo of the day: The #railway station at Merrigum, Vic, November 22 1986.

Merrigum is 189km from Melbourne on the Toolamba-Echuca railway in North Central Victoria. Until 1981, Merrigum was served by passenger railmotors between Toolamba and Echuca, connecting at Toolamba with main line trains to and from Melbourne.

Those trains were replaced in 1981 by buses which continue to serve Merrigum today although they now connect with Shepparton-Melbourne trains at Murchison East.

Michelago is a small town in the Southern Tablelands region of southern NSW, 50km or so south of Canberra. The #railway station is 370km from Sydney on the now disused Queanbeyan to Bombala railway.

Lethbridge is 99km from Melbourne on the cross-country broad gauge Geelong to Ballarat #railway. Built in 1862 to a high standard befitting its original status as the main line to the gold rush centre of Ballarat, the line was originally double track, and most stations were built of solid local volcanic bluestone.

Today's historic photo of the day: A British Rail train from Kyle of Lochalsh bound for Inverness, hauled by diesel locomotive 37421, with what appears to be a peat fire on the hills near Achnasheen, Scotland, UK, April 28 1988.

The Kyle of Lochalsh #railway travels across Scotland from Inverness through the highlands to Kyle of Lochalsh on the west coast. Achnasheen is in the heart of the Scottish highlands, about half way between Inverness and Kyle of Lochalsh on the west coast.

Today's historic photo of the day: The little lineside stopping place, with a nameboard and waiting shelter at Townsville West, Qld, July 22 1986.

This stopping place, located in Townsville's inner western suburbs, was on a section of Queensland Rail's 1067mm gauge main North Coast Line from Brisbane to Cairns where the #railway runs along the median of Ingham Road. There were once thousands of little stopping places like this right across Queensland's rail network.
