Impressions from a February 2015 train trip on the #Circumetnea 🇮🇹 railway in #Sicily, around Mt. Etna (🌋), as the name suggests. The scenic narrow gauge lines passes along green pastures and arid lava fields.

An #FS 🇮🇹 class #ALe601 unit, photographed at #Roma Termini in April 1983. Among the trains worked by these units: the #Rapido “Peloritano” composed of several sections, i.a. to and from #Palermo and #Siracusa, crossing the Strait of #Messina between #Sicily and the mainland by ferry.

Im Museo di Sale in Nubia dient eine alte Windmühle als beeindruckender Rahmen für die Salz-Ausstellung. Heute übernehmen moderne elektrische Pumpen diese Arbeit, während die Mühle als Museum die Geschichte der sizilianischen Salzgewinnung lebendig macht.

Good Morning from the #Trenitalia 🇮🇹 #InterCityNotte from #Sicily to #Milan. Breakfast ist served in the sleeper cabin at dawn as we pass the Cinque Terre hilltop villages. What a beautiful day at the Riviera di Levante. No opening windows on the train though, yet last night’s rain did some good cleaning work.

Travelling by train between #Sicily 🇮🇹 and mainland #Italy includes a #ferry crossing, one of the highlights of the trip. The carriages are loaded on the ship. During the sailing, passengers can enjoy some fresh air on the upper decks and try out the famous #Arancini from the ship’s buffet.

Leaving #Sicily 🇮🇹 for northern #Italy on this #Trenitalia #InterCityNotte, a genuine “cross-country” long distance sleeper service. About 22 hours, if one travels all the way from either #Siracusa or #Palermo through to #Milan.
Settling into the sleeper cabin, which is still in daytime “sofa” configuration.

First train today: #Palermo 🇮🇹 to #Messina by #Trenitalia #InterCity. It’s a push-pull operation: after the ferry-crossing from #Sicily to the mainland, the train will be coupled to a section originating in #Siracusa. I’m travelling in a former, 2nd generation, Grand Confort car, refurbished to an “IC Sun” interior with seat bays for two or four passengers. And: there are vending machines for drinks and snacks on the train, but no @diningcar .

The #FS 🇮🇹 #Trenitalia #InterCity trains running between #Sicily and #Rome don’t have a proper #DiningCar in their consist. However, there’s a snack point (with a coffee machine) in a multi-purpose car. These cars were rebuilt from various types of 1970s #GranConfort or #SelfService diners.
