#OTD Nikolai Vavilov, Russian #Botanist & #Plant #Geneticist, died of starvation at the Saratov concentration camp.

Meanwhile, Nikolai's team of scientists were held up inside the Russian #SeedBank, saving the precious repository from the 900-day siege of #StPetersburg. Placing the security of the world's seeds (some edible) over their own survival, some valiant #Botanists starved to death.

Today the seed bank honors Niko as the Vavilov Institute of Plant Genetic Resources.
