#OTD Nikolai Vavilov, Russian #Botanist & #Plant #Geneticist, died of starvation at the Saratov concentration camp.

Meanwhile, Nikolai's team of scientists were held up inside the Russian #SeedBank, saving the precious repository from the 900-day siege of #StPetersburg. Placing the security of the world's seeds (some edible) over their own survival, some valiant #Botanists starved to death.

Today the seed bank honors Niko as the Vavilov Institute of Plant Genetic Resources.

#OTD Senator Dirksen introduced a bill to make the #Marigold the American National Flower. It did not pass.

The Marigold (Calendula officinalis) is an #October birth #Flower & culinary herb.
The entire #Plant is edible.

In #Floriography, Marigold's meaning is inspired by the #Sun: power, strength, & constancy.

Called the Sun's Bride, they also symbolize lost love. If your inner strength is broken by loss - from death or a breakup - the Marigold represents that sorrow.
