Some recent comics I've read.

"Kali" (2022)

I loved the visual elements of this dystopian comic by Daniel Freedman and Robert Sammelin. Lots of revenge driven action with bikes, guns and explosions. The story unfortunately lacks depth, and kind of ruins it a bit.

Itämisen ihme (2023) [Finnish]

Cute book by Jiipu Uusitalo celebrating plants, and specifically growing your own edibles. Somewhat lacking in story otherwise though. But it's cute, and plants are great!

openlibrary.org/books/OL624863…

Kanerva ja yks juttu (2007) [Finnish]

Comic by Petteri Tikkanen features Kanerva, a child whose grandmother is dying. Unable to accept this, Kanerva, and their friend, aim to make the grandmother's remaining days memorable and worth living.

Dealing with a sad topic, I think this book does well in focusing on the joys of having someone precious around you while you still can.

Pitkän sodan lyhyt historia (2025) [Finnish]

Translation from Ukrainian, original title Коротка історія довгої війни, English translation A Brief History of a Long War, by authors Mariam Naiem, _Julija Vus and Ivan Kypibida, tells the history of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine through hundreds and hundreds of years, while focusing on the current Russian invasion between lessons of history.

While I'm definitely of course on the Ukrainian side, I have a slight allergy to books that draw on a nationalistic narrative, being somewhat of a "there should be no borders at all" kind of person. It's obvious the history of Ukraine is a topic of persecution, injustice, cultural subjugation and pure genocide. But even defending against such crimes can easily go into the glorification of the nation or culture under attack.

All that said (because the above is largely unrelated to Ukraine or Russia), the book is very well narrated and drawn, and I fully recommend it, both from the view on history in the region, but also the suffering of the people in the region now.

Today in Labor History August 23, 1927: Sacco and Vanzetti, two Italian immigrant anarchists living in the U.S., were executed murder during a botched robbery in Boston. However, there was no evidence linking them to the crime. They both had alibis, too, including an official at the Italian consulate. Their trial was rife with racism and political bias. The judge, Webster Thayer, said the following about Vanzetti: "This man, although he may not have actually committed the crime attributed to him, is nevertheless morally culpable, because he is the enemy of our existing institutions." The jury foreman, who was a former cop, said he didn’t care if they were innocent: "Damn them. They ought to hang anyway."

The author, John Dos Passos, who came to Boston to cover the trial as a journalist, was arrested at a solidarity protest along with writer Dorothy Parker. Einstein, H.G. Wells, and Bernard Shaw all appealed for Sacco and Vanzetti lives. The IWW called for a 3-day nationwide General Strike, which was heeded by 1,132 out of the 1,167 miners in Colorado’s Walsenburg coal district, leading to the Colorado coal strike of 1927. The day after their execution, there were violent demonstrations around the world, including in Tokyo, Geneva, London, and Paris. In South America, wildcat solidarity strikes completely shut down many factories. In Germany, 3 protesters were shot dead. In Boston, over 200,000 came to the funeral procession. Upton Sinclair’s novel, “Boston,” explores the trial, and Vanzetti's life. Woody Guthrie recorded a series of songs known as the Ballads of Sacco & Vanzetti. In 1971, Joan Baez recorded her song "Here's to You," with music composed by Ennio Morricone, a tribute to Sacco & Vanzetti that went on to become a symbol for the human rights movement of the 1970s.

This week I've been mainly reading, no. 324.

Rebecca Perry's May We Feed the King (2026) is a wonderfully sparsely written semi-historical novel; bookended by a tale of a curator preparing an displays in a former royal residence, of a King's life, the main part of the story offers a tale of a King who arrives on the thrown unexpectedly (after both his elder brothers die). This is a wonderful exercise in economic story telling showing sometimes less is very much more!

kolektiva.social/@MikeDunnAuth… MikeDunnAuthor@kolektiva.social - Today in Labor History August 22, 1791: Encouraged by the French and American revolutions, Toussaint Louverture led over 100,000 Haitian slaves in a revolt against the French. They were ultimately successful, making Haiti the first black republic in the world. In 1802, he was invited to parlay with the French, but was betrayed and arrested. His lieutenant, Jean-Jacques Dessalines, continued the fight, ultimately defeated the French army in 1803. The US refused recognition of Haiti until 1862, as a result of pressure from Southern slaveholders. The French demanded $21 billion In today’s dollars) in reparations for the losses to the former slaveholders, in exchange for peace and recognition of Haiti as an independent nation. The debt was financed through French banks and the U.S. bank, Citibank. The Haitians finally paid it off in 1947. However, the huge interest payments for their independence debt, and the debt incurred through the corruption of the Duvalier dynasty, have made Haiti one of the poorest nations in the western hemisphere. Prior to independence, Haiti was the richest and most productive of all of Europe’s colonies.

The best book I’ve read on the Haitian Revolution is “The Black Jacobins,” by Trinidadian socialist C.L.R. James. Cuban writer Alejo Carpentier explores the revolution in his novel, “The Kingdom of This World” (1949). You can read more about Toussaint Louverture and the slave uprising in Madison Smartt Bell’s trilogy called “All Souls' Rising” (1995) and Isabel Allende’s 2010 novel, “Island Beneath the Sea.”

Ursula K. LeGuin's "Earthsea" cycle is an excellent thing to re-read in your early 40ies, to see how different and still the same it feels in the middle of your life instead of the first quarter.

And this particular edition - hard to hold in your hands, impossible to carry with you, but containing quiet a few extra texts - is something I definitely recommend, too.
