As a fellow white guy who also wants this place to be welcoming to everyone (well, welcoming to everyone except bigots), I’ve begun following the #BlackMastodon hashtag and it *feels* like more presence than when I joined a few years ago. I see more content from outside my bubble, but also I figure that gives me some chance to notice any bigotry-in-progress and jump in and scan for de-federatable offenses.

They were ultimately successful, making Haiti the first black republic in the world. In 1802, he was invited to parlay with the French, but was betrayed and arrested. His lieutenant, Jean-Jacques Dessalines, continued the fight, ultimately defeated the French army in 1803. The US refused recognition of Haiti until 1862, as a result of pressure from Southern slaveholders. The French demanded $21 billion In today’s dollars) in reparations for the losses to the former slaveholders, in exchange for peace and recognition of Haiti as an independent nation. The debt was financed through French banks and the U.S. bank, Citibank. The Haitians finally paid it off in 1947. However, the huge interest payments for their independence debt, and the debt incurred through the corruption of the Duvalier dynasty, have made Haiti one of the poorest nations in the western hemisphere. Prior to independence, Haiti was the richest and most productive of all of Europe’s colonies.

The best book I’ve read on the Haitian Revolution is “The Black Jacobins,” by Trinidadian socialist C.L.R. James. Cuban writer Alejo Carpentier explores the revolution in his novel, “The Kingdom of This World” (1949). You can read more about Toussaint Louverture and the slave uprising in Madison Smartt Bell’s trilogy called “All Souls' Rising” (1995) and Isabel Allende’s 2010 novel, “Island Beneath the Sea.”

The cost for that refusal to deal with the reality of racism and its impact on Black and Brown communities is high. Why is it important for white allies to acknowledge this? Because the ongoing refusal to acknowledge this basic fact of 1) prevents the formation of real multicultural alliances; 2) allows allies to view harms as those that affect only their communities and not the ones that look nothing like them; and 3) it allows folks to continue to avoid doing of the painful intersectional analysis of the harms racism creates. 4/8

The attempted genocide of Native Americans, the enslavement of Africans and African Americans, the denial of civil rights, the discrimination against the Chinese, the internment of the Japanese, the ongoing attacks on Mexican Americans and anyone that speaks Spanish or looks a little too brown. I’m not criticizing the wonderfully brave work that is being done in support of our immigrant community. But we must strive to keep ourselves educated about the invisible ways ingrained societal racism impacts us all. It’s like when Kissinger died, you all said he should rot in hell. I was like yes! These are my people.
