The 3rd Berlin FediDay is a networking event for people in the Fediverse. Through talks, workshops and networking opportunities, we aim to spread knowledge about the Fediverse, promote creative solutions and strengthen dialogue between developers, admins, academia, civil society and content creators. With over 70 sessions across three halls, a workshop room and several cosy meeting spots stretching from the banks of the Spree to the roof terrace, FediDay is the largest conference dedicated to alternative social networks. It will take place from 11 to 13 September at c-base in Berlin.
We are convinced that a decentralised and free network is the best way to establish a sustainable alternative to Big Tech. This is the only way to enable democratic exchange without being dependent on platforms controlled by profit-driven monopolists, which use algorithmically generated timelines to serve us adverts, promote right-wing baiting or hide content they find objectionable.
Our aim is therefore to establish and expand a strong network that brings together expertise and encourages and empowers participants to remain actively involved after the event and to support each other’s projects. Together, we want to further strengthen the Fediverse in German-speaking countries and across Europe, and provide a platform that fosters exchange and cooperation within the community.
Perhaps you’re already active on Mastodon, Pixelfed or PeerTube. Perhaps you develop applications yourself or are involved with decentralised social networks for activist reasons, for research purposes, or as a platform for sharing your art. Whether you’re a power user or completely new, the programme offers everything you’d expect from a good hacker conference, from beginner’s workshops to panel discussions and parties.

Wir sind überzeugt davon, dass ein föderiertes und freies Netz der beste Weg ist, eine nachhaltige Alternative zu Big Tech zu etablieren. Nur so kann ein demokratischer Austausch ermöglicht werden, ohne auf Plattformen angwiesen zu sein, die in den Händen von gewinnorientierten Monopolisten liegen und uns mit algorithmisch generierten Timelines Werbung ausspielen und rechte Hetze in den Vordergrund rücken oder unliebsame Inhalte vorenthalten.
Daher ist unser Ziel, ein solides Netzwerk auf- und auszubauen, das die Expertise bündelt und die Teilnehmenden ermutigt und befähigt, sich auch nach der Veranstaltung aktiv einzubringen und ihre Projekte gegenseitig zu unterstützen. Gemeinsam wollen wir das Fediverse im deutschsprachigen Raum und Europa weiter stärken und bieten eine Plattform, die den Austausch und die Zusammenarbeit innerhalb der Community fördert.

Trump said today that he will "soon" declare the Strait of Hormuz a U.S. territory. Let's be clear about what that would actually be: illegal.
The President has no constitutional power to unilaterally acquire territory. That power belongs to Congress. Every U.S. territorial acquisition in history — Louisiana, Alaska, Texas, Hawaii — required a treaty or an act of Congress. Not a rally speech. Not a proclamation.
And the Strait of Hormuz isn't unclaimed land. It runs through the sovereign territorial waters of Iran and Oman. Seizing it isn't a real estate deal. It's conquest.
Since 1945, the international legal order has explicitly banned exactly this: the UN Charter prohibits "the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity...of any state." The U.S. helped write that rule. Territorial conquest by force is the thing the postwar order exists to prevent.
If this happens, it will not be a bold new policy. It will be an unconstitutional and illegal seizure of another nation's sovereign territory, and it should be named as exactly that from the start, not normalized through repetition.
Silence and shrugs are how a trial balloon becomes policy. Say something.
