This is the new Pixelfed. Not a redesign, a rebuild.

The entire webUI from scratch: faster, more accessible, and properly responsive on mobile and desktop.

Coming soon. #pixelfed

Looking beautiful! Just out of curiosity, I'm wondering how similar the Loops and Pixelfed apps are? Are you trying to use similar interaction patterns between them so one feels familiar to users of the other, or are you trying to fit the UX specifically around the medium?

#Loops #Pixelfed #Fediverse

If you use Pixelfed's "Sign in with Mastodon" feature, it does not actually sign you in with Mastodon.

What it does do is create a totally new Pixelfed account every time you use this feature, and copies over info from your Mastodon account. You end up with two separate unconnected accounts, your original one on Mastodon and a new one on Pixelfed.

It might be better to call this feature "Create a new Pixelfed account by copying your profile from Mastodon".

Sehr schade. Vielleicht auch nur eine alte Version auf #f_droid ?

Two suggestions

1. hook up with Mastodon.art if you want to increase your visibility as an artist. @Curator may be able to advise

2. Pixelfed is based towards image posts and is part of the Fediverse #pixelfed , read about it here: fedi.tips/pixelfed-photo-shari…

#pixelfed

Due to Android API changes, we need to submit a new build that meets target API requirements before August 31.

We will be submitting it for approval in the next day or two, and can't wait to get it in your hands!

No podía.

Pedí explicaciones a @pixelfed hace varios días.

Attention please! (Clears his throat).

Seeing that the Pixelfed.social server was receiving spam and scam accounts, I decided to switch server. Imagine my surprise when I discovered... I couldn't. You can't migrate a Pixelfed.social profile to another instance. Apparently, this has been the case for over a year, by other complaints I've seen.

The lead developer has said something like they're working on fixing it, but it's been like this for a while...

I asked @pixelfed for an explanation several days ago. They've posted things, but they haven't answered to me.

Meanwhile, they've disabled one of the main features of the Fediverse on the largest (and "official") #Pixelfed server.

In other words, they're holding all their users hostage, which goes against the philosophy of the #Fediverse.

What's more, Pixelfed has a function to export your data. However, exporting posts always fails.

I thought, well, at least I can import the people I follow. Nope, because the only import tool they've designed is one for importing your Instagram account. Disabled on the main Pixelfed.social server, by the way.

I even started to think it was because they were one version behind the server I wanted to move to (which would be strange, since it's the main server).

Well, no, they have the same version. But you can only migrate your account INTO Pixelfed.social, not the other way, OUT of Pixelfed.social. That makes the whole thing crystal clear to me.

In short: NEVER create an account on Pixelfed.social, or you'll be held hostage. I recommend another servers (Luzeed, Fotolibre, for example). And there's also @vernissage for sharing photos.

You can all follow me again at this account: @andrewblasco@luzeed.org. Because of course, without account migration, you lose all your followers 🤷🏽‍♂️

The all-new Pixelfed app is almost here. Rebuilt from the ground up to be faster, smoother, and more reliable. A better way to share your photos with your people. #pixelfed

Quick update.

Account migration on pixelfed.social is disabled. I hit bugs in the flow and chose to pull it rather than let people run into them.

It’s temporary, and account portability is not something I take lightly.

Meanwhile I’m setting loops aside to give pixelfed the year it deserves: new mobile app, new web ui, improved federation, and a much faster backend.

Thanks for the patience. It’s one person over here, and I’d rather be slow than sloppy.

#pixelfed #openSource

Has anyone successfully migrated an account from #pixelfed to #vernissage ..?

Pinging @vernissage in case they know..

[yes I know there's current fedidrama around pixelfed.social and migrations but I'm talking about a different PF instance that appears to have migrations enabled]

People with normal jobs: “Thank god it’s Friday!”

Me: “It’s Friday?”

When you work from home building your dream project, the week becomes one long continuous deployment.

And when I finally take some time off, I apparently spend it driving to conferences to talk about work.

This sounds like a complaint.

It absolutely is not.

I am a little bit sad that the #Fediverse largely cristallised in a way that made Mastodon-like microblogging the default, and everything else an 'extension' at best.

Of course there are other systems and software choices out there, but from what I can see, the only non-microblogging one with real staying power is Pixelfed.

I am a big fan of the 'personal macroblogging' style of social media, i. e. what Facebook and Myspace were back in the day. Specifically, a big focus on structured social data and the way software uses that to provide functionality automatically.

I want expansive profiles with tons of fields like hobbies, birthday and other anniversaries, fun fact and trivia, favourite bands, foods, songs, ideology, location, nicknames, game collections...

And I want the software to be able to use that data for cool functionality! I want birthday reminders for my friends, I wanna get profile recommendations for people with similar hobbies and tastes! I want to be able to create events and notify everyone who is into the same things! I want to be able to have hobby groups to post into and fanpages and all.

Over here on the microblogging side of things, profiles are pretty barebones and there's hardly any data integration. The only fields that software really considers is name, pronouns, hashtags and in some cases specific integrations like ListenBrainz on GoToSocial. That's it. Everything beyond that is just posts.

I get why collecting and sharing vast amounts of personal data kiiinda went out of fashion, but I think consent-based systems rather than data brokers would make me comfortable enough to share these things.

I know Friendica and Diaspora exist, but their development is super slow, they don't federate well, and more importantly, their communities are nonexistant. What use is the best technology in the world if nobody uses it? Noone uses Friendica events and birthdays and whatever. That makes me sad.

I even created for a festival I'm doing the account, a #Mastodon account, and not a #Pixelfed account on my own instance, because it's too buggy.
This says everything.

But I see how good #Loops is really working, so I really have the hope that #Pixelfed will be as good when they share the same code.

The broken account migration should be fixed since the last release btw. @occult

Dan will upgrade #Pixelfed to the #Loops code, so both will run the same software.
Dan also got paid through funding to build Loops, not Pixelfed from NLnet. So it's understandable from his view, that he switched priorities. And if you see all my posts, I complained a lot, and filled out a lot of bug reports.
As a Pixelfed instance owner I'm super unhappy about how it's going at the moment.

FediSuite - Your Fediverse Management Platform

Version 1.6.2 released!

Changes

  • The list of posts written in FediSuite is now split and switchable via button tabs between: Scheduled Posts, Published Posts, and Failed Posts. Each of these lists can be filtered.
  • Collapsing the sidebar previously hid the submenu under "Admin Area." This has been fixed.

Version 1.6.1 already brought a complete redesign of FediSuite.

If you like FediSuite and think this project deserves a bit of support, feel free to show it with toots and boosts across the Fediverse! Of course, there's also the option of financial support. Just use the yellow buttons in the FediSuite app or on the FediSuite website! Thank you very much!

Allowing the recovery of users accidentally deleted by moderators - A new issue for @pixelfed

It would be helpful if a user deletion could be undone, as is the case with Mastodon or Lemmy. It would be sufficient for a user to be restored within a certain period (30 days?).

An alternative could be to add an intermediate stage between the active and deleted accounts, namely the blocked (or frozen) account. This way, the user and all their content are made invisible until the administrator can get feedback from the user.
This way, even if the user were accidentally blocked, the operation would be reversible.

Pixelfed is enjoying great success, and we administrators are doing everything we can to contribute to this success, both through careful and ongoing moderation and by keeping registrations open. Unfortunately, this has led to an influx of spammers, and one way to address this is to mass-delete all suspicious users based on their username, language, and other external factors.
The inability to restore accidentally deleted users, however, limits this solution and forces us to spend a considerable amount of time manually checking each suspicious account.

@InnocentZero If you absolutely need a dedicated mobile app with a mobile UI, and you're on Android, then Friendica is without an alternative.

Otherwise I'd recommend Hubzilla (including if you're on an iPhone, for this means that you will have to use the Web interface either way). Yes, it's feature-rich. Yes, it may have a staggering learning curve. Yes, it isn't recommended to use your new channel at default settings, so you will have to put some work into it before you start.

But: You won't be on your own while trying out Hubzilla, even less than on Mastodon. Hubzilla has a small but active community, it has a support forum (@Hubzilla Support Forum), and it probably has the best user documentation of all Fediverse software, fairly recently re-written by @Der Pepe (Hubzilla) ⁂.

Pepe also wrote a step-by-step guide on how to join Hubzilla.

Now, picking a good server is more difficult than on Mastodon, not only because there aren't exactly many. Of course, it's important that you can join it in the first place. Keep an eye on those that require admin approval, though.

Then there's the software version. If a Mastodon server is running an old version, this can mean that the admin disapproves of certain changes such as new features and tries hard to run the last major version (or even the last major version but one) for as long as it's still supported. If a Hubzilla server is running an old version, it's underadministered, full stop.

The current Hubzilla version is 11.2.1. It has been out for so long that even a server running 11.2 should give you to think. By the way, anything newer than this such as 11.5 is a bleeding-edge development version. Daily-driving zotum.net is somewhat like daily-driving mastodon.online: You get all the new features before everyone else, but you're also much more likely to have to deal with breakage, incompatibilities and so forth, including incompatible third-party apps and themes on Hubzilla.

Speaking of apps, they're important, too. Adding /siteinfo/json after the domain of a hub reveals things like the Hubzilla version, the admins along with links to their channels, but also which apps are activated. For example, the MMN Hub might look tempting. But it was only launched last month, even the admin doesn't appear to be really active, a glance at hub.mmn.ca/siteinfo/json reveals that it's almost bare-bone, and the small selection of activated apps is kind of weird. It has Articles, it has the LiveJournal crossposter, but it lacks both NSFW and Superblock. Compare this with hub.hubzilla.de and Pepe's own (invite-only) Whoville which even has @Saiwal's great third-party themes installed.

In general, interaction with Lemmy appears to work reasonably well, only that you have to go to the source to get the link in a start post. I may have to check how easy it is to start a new thread on Lemmy from Hubzilla.

Connecting with PeerTube works, too, only that Hubzilla understands PeerTube channels as groups for some reason.

Pixelfed hasn't caused me any trouble yet either, but then, I don't interact with it, I only receive image posts from it.
