Happy birthday to mathematician and NASA scientist Katherine Johnson (née Coleman; August 26, 1918 – February 24, 2020). One of the first Black women employed as a NASA scientist (and its predecessor NACA), she was known for her mastery of complex manual calculations of orbital mechanics and played a pivotal role in the success of the US crewed spaceflights from the beginning. 🧵

Two years ago, a group of older men told me that “everything on the history of women in science has already been published” 🙃🤦‍♀️

Two papers on Rosalind Franklin is “research completed”…

But there’s no problem producing the 1000th paper on Isaac Newton or Albert Einstein…

Written partly out of spite, but mostly out of passion for making women’s stories visible, this is my new paper on the early history of women in Australian #scicomm.

The coeds of 1894

In the 1890s, MIT alumnae weren’t expected to have meaningful careers. The women of the Class of 1894 proved that assumption wrong.

Happy birthday to British-born, American #astrophysicist Margaret Burbidge (1919-2020) who was one of the people instrumental in building our understanding of stellar nucleosynthesis, how nuclei are produced in stars & you and I are all stardust! She was the 1st author of a monumental scientific paper Synthesis of the Elements in Stars, which became known as B2FH from the initials of its authors: 🧵1/4

spore.social/@minouette/117065… minouette@spore.social - Happy birthday to #mathematician, aeronautical #engineer, philanthropist and Cherokee ‘hidden figure’ of the space race: Mary Golda Ross (1908-2008).

Great-great-granddaughter of Chief John Ross, who was forced to lead his people on the Trail of Tears, Ross attributed her success in math to the Cherokee tradition of encouraging equal education for boys and girls. 🧵1/

Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin

Our July POTM looks at the life of Nobel Prize-winning crystallographer Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin, who lived most of her adult life with rheumatoid arthritis.

Enrico Fermi Fellowship for Laura Roberts – PhD student at @mpi_grav in Hanover, Germany, wins generous financial support for cross-training in theoretical and experimental physics.

Laura Roberts will receive €200,000 over two years through an Enrico Fermi Fellowship.

The fellowship is aimed at cross-training in theory and experiments. It will support Roberts’ work on preparing the first laboratory observation of vacuum magnetic birefringence – a 90-year-old theoretical prediction.

Measuring the predicted effect or placing stringent limits close to it would test new physics beyond the standard model, including dark matter.
