A Newport Beach couple who combine their skill and shared love for exotic cars to create paintings celebrating performance automobiles showed their artwork during an invitation-only gathering in Irvine Saturday.

Andrea and Rob Berberian said they hosted “Art in Motion” to promote their commissioned art and the local automotive community. Together, the duo painted four pieces that were unveiled during the course of the evening.

“We decided as part of our collaboration to incorporate different elements of what we specialize in independently and put it together in one painting,” Rob Berberian said. “The beauty of it is [that] we worked together to design the concept with the input of the client’s stories; what they do in life, what their journey is, why they got that particular car and what it means to them.”

One of the pieces they created highlighted Rob Berberian’s own Ferrari F12 and his background as a hair transplant surgeon. It features the silver sports car with black and red stripes as well as a procession of men representing different stages of the hair regrowth process.

For members of the car community and owners of exotic cars, their vehicles can become closely tied to their identity, Andrea Berberian said.

“It’s almost like Batman and the Batmobile or like Barbie and her Jeep,” she said. “These are characters in the community. So there’s Johnny in the white [Lamborghini] Revuelto, or like Chris in the black Revuelto or Emmanuel and the red Porsche, and there’s us with the silver Ferrari with the stripes.”

Even though the cost and rarity of exotic cars inherently reserves their ownership for a small number of people, the community that surrounds them is welcoming and diverse, Rob Bernerian said, adding that people of all walks of life can appreciate their artistry, craftsmanship and performance, even if they might not get a chance to get behind the wheel.

“It’s just meeting people,” he said. “It doesn’t have to be someone who has the exact same car as you, but somebody with an affinity and love for cars.”
