A man and woman from Huntington Beach were killed Tuesday in an early morning crash near Fountain Valley High School, when their vehicle collided with another motorist at the intersection of Bushard Street and Slater Avenue, according to local police.
Officers were called to the scene shortly after 4:30 a.m. by a report of a collision, according to a social media post made by Fountain Valley Police Department spokesman Sgt. Bill Hughes. The incident took place just yards away from the local high school.
First responders arrived to discover a silver Ford Flex SUV, containing a single male driver, and a silver Nissan Kicks subcompact SUV occupied by a man and woman, who both were pronounced dead at the scene, Hughes said via Instagram Tuesday.
The driver of the Ford was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries. Details on the man’s age and city of residence were not immediately available.
The two people killed in the crash were identified Thursday by county coroner’s officials as Maria Del Rosario Crisanto Mendoza, 42, and 46-year-old Manuel Garcia Campos, both residents of Huntington Beach, according to Orange County sheriff’s spokeswoman Sgt. Lisbeth Gwisdalla.
Hughes said a preliminary investigation indicates the Nissan was traveling eastbound on Slater Avenue when it collided with the Ford, which was heading northbound on Bushard Street, before both vehicles came to a stop near the northeast corner of the intersection.
Investigators are working to determine the cause of the crash, the sergeant said, and it is yet unknown whether high speeds or impairment on the part of either driver may have played a role in the incident.
Anyone who may have witnessed the collision or the incidents leading up to it is asked to call Fountain Valley Police Department’s Traffic Bureau at (714) 593-4481 and reference report number DR# 26-36679.
