Seventh Trident Nuclear Sub Christened

GROTON, Conn. — The seventh Trident nuclear submarine was christened the Alaska on Saturday, and Alaska’s Sen. Ted Stevens, a Republican, said it would deter war. Outside the launching ceremonies, 28 protesters were arrested on charges of disorderly conduct.
Stevens told 1,400 people gathered at the Electric Boat shipyard, a subsidiary of General Dynamics Corp., that he was alarmed at the Soviet Union’s buildup of its submarine force.
“The Alaska and her sister ships illustrate our commitment to deter the possibility of nuclear exchange,” Stevens added.
The Navy’s Trident submarines each carry 24 long-range, multiple-warhead nuclear missiles.
