Outbreaks of Influenza Reported in 22 States

A sharp upsurge in influenza activity across the country was reported Thursday by the national Centers for Disease Control, with 22 states, including California, listing outbreaks of the respiratory disease.

Most of the cases were caused by the A(H3N2) virus strains, the CDC said, the same type that caused worldwide epidemics in 1957-58 and again in 1967-68.
