Salvador Talks Unlikely

A third round of peace talks between the U.S.-backed government and leftist guerrillas in El Salvador does not appear likely to occur soon, according to Roman Catholic Auxiliary Bishop Gregorio Rosa Chavez. Church officials mediated two previous sessions on Oct. 15 and Nov. 30. Rosa Chavez said in San Salvador that “certain sectors of the government” do not want more talks and that a date has not been set. Officials of the government of moderate President Jose Napoleon Duarte have blamed rightists, who control the legislative assembly and the army, for opposing further talks.
