The state Department of Savings and Loan will be without a commissioner for at least another two weeks following the withdrawal from consideration of the leading candidate for the job, Donald W. Crocker.
Crocker, an S&L; consultant, confirmed that he withdrew his name from consideration after a recent talk with Gov. George Deukmejian. The governor “wanted to consider a different approach” than he did, Crocker said. He would not elaborate.
California has been without a permanent savings and loan chief since the beginning of the year when the previous commissioner, Lawrence Taggart, resigned.
Crocker, viewed as a traditionalist in the area of S&L; industry deregulation, had the backing of California’s older, larger associations. Among the half a dozen others in the running are Regan Kelly, who was one of Taggart’s top assistants and has the backing of the state’s newer, smaller S&Ls.;
Larry Thomas, press secretary for Deukmejian, said it would be “another two weeks” at the earliest before a selection is made.
