Teen-Ager in Texas Convicted of Slaying Female Letter Carrier; His Parents Had Refused to Testify

Associated Press

A teen-ager was convicted Friday of murdering a female letter carrier last year.

David Port, 18, was found guilty in the shooting death of Debora Sue Schatz, 23, who disappeared June 7 while delivering mail in Port’s affluent Houston neighborhood. Her body was found two days later.

Jurors deliberated for 2 1/2 hours before deciding the case, which drew national attention when Port’s parents, Bernard and Odette, were jailed on contempt-of-court charges for refusing to testify before a grand jury investigating their son. The parents were jailed while their son was free on a $20,000 bond but later released.

The younger Port faces up to life in prison.
