A man who had been kept alive by life-support systems for a week after eating poisonous wild mushrooms died at Mercy Hospital in San Diego. Jorge Favela was one of four undocumented aliens who ate the mushrooms. His three companions died Saturday. According to hospital spokesman Norman Greene, the men had entered the country illegally from Mexico about a month ago and had been living in a shack near Escondido. Greene said the four apparently picked the mushrooms from a field and ate them after running out of food and money. Like the others, Favela became violently ill soon after eating the mushrooms and lapsed into a coma. Greene said there is no known antidote for the poisonous Amanita phalloides fungus, which causes liver and kidney failure when eaten.
