Authorities suspect arson in a early morning blaze that destroyed two classrooms and severely damaged a third at a Rowland Heights junior high school about 20 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. Damage to the Alvarado School was estimated at $200,000, and Sheriff’s Department investigators believe the 4:47 a.m. fire was deliberately set. It took three engine companies and 50 firefighters about 40 minutes to control the blaze, which began in a tree and quickly spread to the nearby classrooms at 1901 S. Desire Ave.
