Newport Beach

Hearing on Smoking Ban:A ban on smoking in public places moved a little closer to reality Tuesday as the City Council set a hearing for June 10 on a proposed ordinance. The council agreed during a study session to consider regulations submitted to the city by local attorney Michael Christianson. Assistant City Atty. Kenneth Delino said anti-smoking laws in Laguna Beach, Ukiah, Palo Alto and San Francisco were considered and some modifications may be made to Christianson’s version before June 10. Councilman David Strauss said he favors the concept and added that the ordinance seems to be “less severe” than those proposed in some other cities.
