In response to a nationwide challenge from students in New York City, students in the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District have collected about $18,500 in donations for famine-struck Ethiopia, according to officials.
Supt. George Caldwell said that contributions averaged $1.80 a student. “On a per-capita basis, this far outstrips the efforts in Los Angeles and New York City,” he said. Some students had wanted to visit the African nation for a firsthand look at the situation but decided to send more money instead.
