Santa Monica

The state Coastal Commission has approved a plan by Abby Sher, a Santa Monica resident, to convert the former Edgemar Farms egg processing plant on Main Street into the Santa Monica Museum of Art.

The museum, which would include exhibits from local contemporary artists, would be part of a larger commercial venture for the site, including shops and a 75-seat restaurant.

Architect Frank Gehry, who will design the project, has said that he will leave the 77-year-old wood plant, which was once used to grade and pack eggs, relatively untouched.

The plant was built in 1908 by the Imperial Ice Co. for making ice.
