The Region : Solvang Nays Horse-Drawn Buggies

Fearing that horse-drawn buggies will detract from their city’s Danish ambiance, Solvang officials ordered the Old West offenders out of town by sundown--effective in 60 days. On a 5-0 vote, the City Council set up strict restrictions on animal-drawn conveyances. A covered wagon and buggies--driven by two entrepreneurs seeking a piece of the Solvang tourist action--will be subject to steep fines when the law takes effect. The entrepreneurs said they plan to seek legal advice, but at least one Solvang resident sided with the council. “I’ve been to Denmark 14 times and I’ve never seen anything like that,” huffed Ferdinand Sorensen.
