Emerging from the third straight day of negotiations in New York with hotel representatives, the head of the hotel workers’ union said the two sides are very close to reaching a settlement. “We can’t specify proposals, but we’re closer than we’ve ever been,” said Vito Pitta, president of the Hotel and Motel Trades Council. But a spokesman for the hotel association said there is “a lot of work yet to be done.” As the strike headed for its 20th day, the 16,000 hotel workers maintained picket lines at hotels throughout the city, chanting and blowing whistles.
