Peking Census Expected to Pass 11 Million in 2000

PEKING — A baby-boom generation entering child-bearing age will increase Peking’s population to 11.1 million by the end of the century, more than 1 million over the government’s target, a report said Friday.
The capital’s population now stands at 9.45 million.
The state-run China News Service said 1963 was a peak birth year in Peking and the birth rate in 1986-87 will increase as a result.
City planners estimate that Peking’s birth rate gradually will decline from last year’s 14 per 1,000 to 9.89 per 1,000 by the year 2000.
They also expect that 98.5% of urban families will abide by the state’s one-child guideline in the next 15 years.
Life expectancy in Peking is 73 for women and 71 for men, the report said.
