Harold S. Hess has been named vice president for operations at VLI Corp. in Irvine, manufacturer of the contraceptive sponge. Hess, who will oversee manufacturing, production, engineering, shipping and purchasing, replaces Tom Hyans, who left the company. Hess, who joined VLI in 1983, had most recently been director of operations.
