Jerry Hulse’s article on Hershey, Pa., July 21: Since I grew up in Harrisburg, Pa., I read the article with much interest. Hershey is in fact a most delightful vacation spot. I do think, however, that Jerry glossed over Milton Hershey’s reputation. He did build houses for his workers to live in, but he also opened farms on his vast estate to “poor orphan white boys” and kept this policy alive and well through the better part of the 1960s. Hershey was undoubtedly a warm, generous, kind human being, as long as you were a white boy. Just thought you should be aware of this.
