Human remains found in De Anza Cove were brought to the attention of police Thursday by a woman who had passed the bones the previous day but dismissed them as waste from a butcher shop, San Diego police reported.
Police Department spokesman Bill Robinson said the Clairemont woman saw a 2-foot-square plastic bag lying on a sand bar and examined it out of curiosity. After going home, she heard about the decomposed head found floating in a northeastern cove of Mission Bay on Wednesday. The next morning she went back to the site, found the bones and called police.
A preliminary examination of the bones by the county coroner’s office indicated that they had been surgically severed with a sharp instrument, Robinson said.
The head found the previous day has been identified as belonging to a white man between the ages of 20 and 30.
The coroner’s office and police will examine the remains.
