Flipping the Switch

“Why is it so dark in San Diego?” I wondered when visiting there several times this summer. Practically as soon as the sun sets, it is so dark that you can hardly see to drive on the streets. I decided there must be an atmospheric phenomenon to have it be so noticeably different from other parts of the country.
I found the answer in a Times article (Sept. 24) headlined “San Diego to Dim Lights So Astronomers Can See Skies.” Surely the safety of citizens shouldn’t be threatened because of some scientists gathering data. I hope the people in San Diego don’t succumb to having an even darker city than now exists.
