International Paper reported that its net income dropped nearly 80% in the third quarter, largely because of a $29-million set-aside for pension expenses for employees who took advantage of a voluntary retirement program. The company reported net income of $15.2 million on revenue of $1.1 billion. The company estimated that without the charge third-quarter earnings would have been $38 million.
