French Aid Group Says It May Leave Ethiopia

PARIS — A major French medical aid group said Tuesday that it will withdraw from Ethiopia if it is not allowed to open a new center to feed thousands of children afflicted by drought and famine.
Rony Brauman, chairman of Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders), said his agency has requested permission to extend its operations in Kelala, in eastern Ethiopia, into a nutrition center capable of feeding 10,000 children.
But he said the government is reluctant to allow the doctors to keep the children in permanent care, fearing that this might hamper resettlement programs.
