The San Diego school board voted 3 to 2 to ban all students with AIDS from classrooms but to evaluate each employee with AIDS separately, because it would be illegal to automatically ban them from work. Rejecting medical opinion that the fatal disease cannot be transmitted through casual contact, the trustees elected to instruct students with acquired immune deficiency syndrome in their homes through visiting teachers or by phone.
