Tennis Roundup : McEnroe Gets Mad at Himself and Takes It Out on Krishnan

John McEnroe demolished his racket in anger Wednesday, but until then, was uninspired in beating Ramesh Krishnan of India, 6-4, 7-6, in the first round of the $375,000 Stockholm Grand Prix tennis tournament.

The top-seeded McEnroe, a three-time winner at Stockholm, was lethargic until Krishnan took a 5-4 lead in the second-set tiebreaker. At that point, McEnroe became disgusted with himself over a missed shot and smashed his racket on the court. He went for a new racket and hammered in three winners to take the match.

“I was not into the match today,” he said. “It’s been a long year in many ways. I am longing for a rest. I am kind of tired.

“Right now, at this point, it looks like I will end up as No. 2 in the world this year.”

McEnroe meets Spain’s Juan Rodriguez in a second-round match, with the prospect of playing Swedish newcomer Peter Lundgren in the quarterfinals.

Lundgren beat Scott Davis, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, for his second straight upset victory. He had defeated Czechoslovakia’s Tomas Smid in the first round.

At Largo, Fla., top-seeded Bonnie Gadusek lost to Lisa Bonder, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1, in the second round of a $150,000 women’s tournament. Second-seeded Kathy Rinaldi had to withdraw because of tonsillitis.
