PURE SILVERS

In 1943, I was a young soldier stationed at the Roswell Army Air Base in New Mexico and one night I went to see the movie “Cover Girl” at the Post Theater. I saw it three nights in a row because I fell in love with Phil Silvers.
After the war, I became a professional comedy writer and a miracle happened--my first job was writing a radio show for my idol, Phil Silvers. We became good friends and I was fortunate to be able to observe the wit, the warmth and the decency of one of the loveliest men in or out of show business.
The last time I saw Silvers, he was having breakfast at Nate N’ Al’s in Beverly Hills. I walked up to his booth and said, “Phil, how are you?”
Without a beat, he said, “Talented.” He was so right.
