Japan Gives Itself Another Day of Rest

TOKYO — Hard-working Japan has decided to take an extra day off.
Parliament passed a bill Friday making May 4 a public holiday from 1988, canceling a workday sandwiched between Constitution Day on May 3 and Childrens’ Day on May 5.
It means that Japan will have 13 national holidays a year--but most people still work on Saturdays and few take all their holidays for fear of upsetting bosses and colleagues.
