Liberia Drops Charges

MONROVIA, Liberia — The government Wednesday dropped treason charges against a former presidential candidate accused of being involved in an attempt to topple President Samuel K. Doe on Nov. 12. Solicitor General McDonald Kruku, saying the government lacks sufficient evidence to prosecute, announced that it is freeing Jackson Doe, leader of the opposition Liberia Action Party. Doe, no relation to the president, has been jailed since the attempted coup.
