College Baseball Roundup : Swindell Strikes Out 13 Batters as Longhorns Blank the Titans

Pitcher Greg Swindell struck out 13 Friday as No. 3 Texas shut out No. 4 Cal State Fullerton, 6-0, in a nonconference game at Austin, Tex.

The shutout was the first against Fullerton (9-4) in 124 games. Swindell limited Fullerton to six hits, did not allow a Titan runner past second base and did not walk a batter.

Swindell (2-0 this season and 35-4 in his career) has struck out 55 in 32 innings this year with an earned-run average of 0.55.

Designated hitter Doug Hodo was 3 for 4 with a triple and two runs batted in to lead Texas (10-3).

In other action:

UC Irvine 11, Chapman 6--Senior Bo Kent pitched his second complete game of the year and scattered 10 hits as the Anteaters won in Anteater Stadium.

Shortstop Chris Gallego gave Irvine (6-6-1) the lead for good with a two-run double in the third inning. Mike Cruz led Chapman (6-7) with three hits, including a triple, and an RBI.

In community college action:

College of the Canyons 9, Rancho Santiago 8 (11 innings)--Don pitcher Wayne Gilles (0-1) balked in the winning run as the Cougars advanced in the Casey Stengel Tournament.

Los Angeles Harbor 5, Rancho Santiago 4--The Seahawks eliminated the Dons (5-2) from the tournament. Jeff Welch hit a two-run home run for Rancho Santiago.

Cypress 13, Golden West 8--The Chargers scored six runs in the bottom of the second and went on to win in a semifinal game of their own Tournament.

Saddleback 8, Palomar 5--John Seaburger and Bill Dodd homered for the Gauchos in their nonconference win at Palomar.
