S. Korea’s Chun Again Says He’ll Quit in 1988

SEOUL, South Korea — President Chun Doo Hwan of South Korea marked the fifth anniversary of his inauguration Monday by reaffirming that he will step down in 1988, a presidential spokesman said.
Chun told a luncheon with government and Parliament leaders, “The most important task our nation faces at this moment is setting a precedent of a peaceful change of power . . . and I am ready to translate the change into deed for the first time in history.”
All previous South Korean heads of state were deposed either by an uprising, a coup or an assassination.
