The California Medical Assn. proposed a ban on smoking in all hospitals and that alcoholic beverages be required to carry health warnings similar to those on cigarettes. The CMA’s policy-making House of Delegates, meeting in Los Angeles, approved both resolutions and suggested that the CMA work with the California Hospital Assn. to develop the no-smoking policy. On the alcohol issue, delegates estimated that 15% of the nation’s health-care costs are linked in one way or another to alcohol abuse.
